Drawing Wisdom From Deep Waters

Every time I study the ancient book of Proverbs, I am amazed by how relevant it remains to our lives today. As they say, some things never change. Although Proverbs was written thousands of years ago, its wisdom speaks powerfully to our modern world.

I have been studying Proverbs 20 and discovering so many treasures. One verse in particular spoke to me. It addresses one of the most important skills we need in a world where people are not always who they appear to be.

I know many people whose lives have been tragically affected by those who spoke well, appeared trustworthy, and presented themselves with charm—only to reveal very different motives later.

Proverbs reminds us that a person’s true intentions are often hidden beneath the surface.

“If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.” James 1:5 NIV

We Cannot Know Everyone’s Heart

We cannot always know what is in another person’s heart. Sometimes, we do not even fully understand our own—but God does. Nothing is hidden from Him.

The wonderful promise of Scripture is that when we ask, God gives us wisdom and insight. He delights in guiding His children when we seek Him with humble hearts.

Discernment is not about becoming suspicious of everyone. It is about slowing down, listening carefully, noticing patterns, and asking God to help us see beyond appearances.

His wisdom enables us to recognize the truth while continuing to respond with grace and humility.

I do not know about you, but I desperately need His wisdom during this season of my life. More than ever, I want to see people and situations through His eyes instead of relying solely on my limited understanding.

Let’s ask Him together.

Prayer

Dear Father,

You promise that if anyone lacks wisdom, we need only ask, and You will give it generously.

Today, I ask You for supernatural wisdom and insight into the people and situations in my life. Help me see beyond outward appearances and recognize what is true.

Reveal anything that is hidden and protect me from deception. Teach me to notice patterns, listen carefully, and pay attention when Your Spirit warns or redirects me.

At the same time, keep my heart from becoming suspicious, cynical, or judgmental. Help me balance discernment with love, wisdom with grace, and caution with compassion.

Show me anything within my own heart that needs to change. Replace my limited understanding with Your perfect wisdom, and guide every decision I make.

Thank You for faithfully leading me when I seek You.
