I’m regularly amazed at how the ancient book of Proverbs so easily speaks to our lives today. Although it was written thousands of years ago, its wisdom is just as relevant in our modern world. I have been studying Proverbs 20 and have discovered so many treasures. One verse in particular spoke to me. It addresses one of the most important skills we need in today’s world, where people are not always who they appear to be.

I know many people whose lives have been tragically affected by those who spoke well, appeared trustworthy, and presented themselves with charm—only to reveal very different motives later. Proverbs reminds us that a person’s true intentions are often hidden beneath the surface.

“The purposes of a person’s heart are deep waters, but one who has insight draws them out.” Proverbs 20:5 NIV

We Can’t Know Everyone’s Hearts

We cannot always know what is in another person’s heart. Sometimes, we do not even fully understand our own. But God does. Nothing is hidden from Him. The wonderful promise of Scripture is that when we ask, God gives us wisdom and insight. He delights in guiding His children when we seek Him with humble hearts.

Discernment isn’t about becoming suspicious of everyone. It is about slowing down, listening carefully, noticing patterns, and asking God to help us see beyond appearances. His wisdom enables us to recognize truth while continuing to respond with grace and humility. I do not know about you, but I desperately need His wisdom during this season of my life. More than ever, I want to see people and situations through His eyes instead of relying solely on my limited understanding.

Prayer

Dear Father,

You promise in James 1:5 that if anyone lacks wisdom, we need only ask, and You will give it generously. Today, I ask You for supernatural wisdom and insight into the situations I face. Help me discern what cannot be seen with natural eyes. Guard my heart against deception, and teach me to recognize truth with grace and humility. Open my ears to hear Your voice as I read Your Word, and make me sensitive to the leading of Your Holy Spirit. Help me trust Your discernment above my own understanding and follow wherever You lead. In Jesus’ name, amen.
