"But the very hairs of your head are all counted. Therefore don’t be afraid. You are of more value than many sparrows.” Luke 12:7
In Luke 12:7, Jesus provided us with a daily reminder of God’s care and assurance in the tiniest, most unassuming way. Its number changes constantly, but we see and touch it several times daily. It’s our hair. An average person loses between 50 and 100 hairs on an average day.* The simple statement in Luke 12:7 was a timeless reminder to last throughout generations from His time to ours. We lose hair through the routines of our day and during the best and worst times of life. Over two thousand years ago, He made this simple statement to remind us of His daily, intimate care for us.
"The Lord is close to the brokenhearted
and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” Psalm 34:18
Pained, BrokenHearted, Troubled
Did you know that when we are brokenhearted or sick, and as we age, we lose more hair? The very design of Jesus’s words in Luke 12:7 thought is crafted with that knowledge. During troubled times of sickness, turmoil, depression, and the isolation of old age, we can lose more hair. At those very times, Jesus reminds us He is there with that simple scripture. God reaches even back three thousand years to remind us that He is with us when our hearts break. Then, two thousand years ago reminded us that He knows every detail, even our heads’ ever-changing numbers of hair. He is with us as sure as the hair on our heads.
"For I am persuaded that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing will be able to separate us from God’s love which is in Christ Jesus our Lord..”
Romans 8:38-39
Routines and Surprises
The predictable changes in routine hygiene of brushing, combing, washing, and styling our hair creates varied hair loss each time. Yet He knows how many each moment. He keeps track of the average of 100,000 hairs on our heads. We can lose strands of hair in surprising things as well. Altercations, accidents, pulling on a hoodie or a hat, or running too close to a low tree limb can cause an unexpected loss. During daily routines and surprises, we can lose a strand of hair in many ways. He is there for us, with us, with an intimate love that surpasses human understanding.
"If I ascend into heaven, You are there; If I make my bed in hell, behold, You are there. If I take the wings of the morning, And dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, Even there Your hand shall lead me, And Your right hand shall hold me". Psalm 139:8-10
Prayer
Lord, I come before You in awe of Your love and care for me. You know everything that concerns me at any given moment. Thank you for the reminder in Luke 12 of your intimate knowledge, understanding, and care for my daily routine. Thank You for telling us not to fear in the next sentence. As I go throughout my week, as I see that random strand of hair, I will remind myself not to fear. You know the number of ever-changing number hairs on my head. So You know intimately what concerns me, and You love me perfectly, eternally, and will care for me. Thank You for that daily reminder that I don’t need to fear anything; in Jesus’ name, amen.
