Daddy Issues

Today is set aside to celebrate Dads. Some of us have had great dads, others have not, and some may have never known a dad. We tend to view God in the way we perceive our Father. Even if you had the best father, humans are fallible. Everyone fails us. It’s a day that can be triggering for some, but I want to encourage you. The Father’s heart of God is pure in intent; He needs nothing from us and loves us unconditionally. This love is a constant, a source of comfort and reassurance. There may be a hidden daddy issue if we have difficulty believing this. Once we place that in God’s hands and ask Him to heal it, our understanding, knowledge, and faith will be at a depth and height we’d never known.

"As a father shows compassion to his children, so the Lord shows compassion to those who fear him." Psalm 103:13

God Yearns for Us

I urge you to join me in seeking God’s guidance to understand the true, loving, and pure nature of a father. Today, on Father’s Day, we are away from our children. The longing in my husband’s heart to be with His kids and grandchild resonates with me. God desires to spend time with us, have conversations, and be with us even more than we desire from our children. God says He stands at the door, knocks, and waits for us to invite Him in. Today is the perfect day to be thankful for what our fathers instilled in us. It’s also the perfect day to ask God to route out any erroneous ideas we have about God’s character and thoughts toward us. Below are a few scriptures for perspective.

"Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, then I will come in to him, and will dine with him, and he with me." Revelation 3:20

Scriptures about the Father

There are many more sculptures and characters of God; the heart is shown below. I have listed just a few. Read through these or find your own; if any don’t set well or are hard to believe, write them down. Memorize them and meditate on them until they sink in. This is how God’s word changes, heals, and delivers us. No matter how you feel, the scriptures below describe how God really feels towards you and me.

Prayer

Lord, I acknowledge that I have a limited view of you. As I read the scriptures below, I ask that you enlighten my heart. I will meditate on any scripture that doesn’t sit well, pricks my heart, or feels challenging. Show me how You are different from the judgment that kept me from seeing You for who You are. Lord, please heal my heart of any hurt that keeps me from the blessing of knowing You. In Jesus’ name, amen.

"For I know the thoughts that I think toward you,” says Yahweh, “thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you hope and a future. You shall call on me, and you shall go and pray to me, and I will listen to you."  Jeremiah 29:11

Or if he asks for a fish, he won’t give him a snake instead of a fish, will he? 12 Or if he asks for an egg, he won’t give him a scorpion, will he? 13 If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him?” Luke 11:11-13
"Like a father has compassion on his children, so Yahweh has compassion on those who fear him." Psalm 103:13 WEB

"He who didn’t spare his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how would he not also with him freely give us all things?" Romans 8:32
