What Love Is

We need and pine for it; we are blessed by its coming and feel cursed when it is taken from us. Songs, poems, and plays have heralded it for centuries, but we often attribute a feeling to love. However, true love is rooted in actions towards and compassion. God showed His love through His example. He came, gave, and was moved with compassion. True love is not a currency; it’s freely given. It’s demonstrated; it’s an action, not a feeling. We see true love in God, who loved us through His actions not just His words.

Poem

What Love Is
Love is being patient,
love is being kind
Love is giving of yourself;
love is making time.

Love embraces God
When people seem untrue
Love is being kind to those
Who can’t give back to you.

Love gifts to a neighbor,
Expecting nothing back.
With grace it reaches low,
Bringing fullness to one’s lack.

Love is a mighty King
Who forsook a crown and throne
To rescue us from sin and death
To give us heaven’s home.

Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful;[a]it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth.

1 Corinthians 13:4-6

God Took The First Step

God took the first step from heaven to the Earth to lay down His life to pay the price for our sins and wrongdoings. He expected nothing back, and that’s good because we have nothing He needs. We would be lost if He hadn’t taken our punishment that He didn’t deserve, so we wouldn’t have to pay the eternal price. He gave of Himself only out of His great love for us. Imagine if God sat in heaven and said, “I love them so much,” but didn’t come to save us. We would still be separated from us forever, dead in our sins. It was His action that changed our lives, and it’s our actions that will change the lives of others.

10 This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins.

1 John 4:10-12

How God Loves Through Us

God shows His love for His people through us. He put His Spirit in “Jars of Clay” in our temporal bodies and minds to show His love to others through us—God’s love in our actions towards others. We have the opportunity to love others for God and to receive God’s love from others.

11 Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. 12 No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and his love is made complete in us.

1 John 4:11-12

Cancer Journey Love

When I was going through my cancer battle, I received such love from humanity: family, friends, acquaintances, and even perfect strangers. I say of my cancer journey that friends became sisters; acquaintances became friends. As they rallied, when they prayed, and sent me books, gifts, or meals, I knew it was one way that God was showing His love towards me in the worst time. When we are moved with compassion for someone going through hardship, we are feeling God’s heart toward them. God animates us through His compassion for others and works His goodwill to show His love to humanity that He loves so much.

41 Moved with compassion [for his suffering], Jesus reached out with His hand and touched him, and said to him, “I am willing; be cleansed.”
